Eliud Kipchoge’s New Side Quest: 7 Continents, 1 Goat, and Zero Plans to Retire

BY MORGAN PRAKASH|MAY 24, 2026

So, Eliud Kipchoge is 41 now, but instead of sitting on the couch, he’s starting a massive world tour. He wants to run 7 marathons on 7 different continents to raise a million bucks for his charity foundation and just hang out with local running communities.

The first stop? The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. Believe it or not, even though he's the greatest marathon runner to ever live, he had never actually run an official, competitive 26.2-mile race on his home continent before. Here is how the weekend went down:

// 1. The African Homecoming

For a guy who has spent the last decade utterly dominating the slick, paved streets of Berlin, London, Tokyo, and Chicago, coming back to African soil was a huge deal. Kipchoge said before the race that starting here was super emotional for him.

The South African crowd treated him exactly like a rockstar. People were lining the streets singing, dancing, and playing music for hours just to watch him pass by.

// 2. The Actual Race

Look, Kipchoge isn't trying to break world records or drop crazy sub-two-hour times anymore. He’s basically doing a giant victory lap for his career. The front of the elite pack was an absolute meat grinder, with everyone trying to make a statement.

Mohamed Esa totally crushed it, making a massive surge near the end to win in 2:04:55. That absolutely shattered the old course record by over three minutes.

Kipchoge crossed the finish line in 16th place with a time of 2:13:29. Honestly? Running a 2:13 at 41 years old while soaking in the energy and high-fiving screaming fans is the ultimate flex. He post-race smiled and said the whole day was just a celebration of running.

// 3. Where in the World is Eliud Next?

Cape Town is actively trying to become Africa's very first Abbott World Marathon Major, and having the GOAT show up is basically a giant five-star review for their application.

As for Kipchoge, he's packing his bags for South America next. He is officially locked in to tackle the Porto Alegre Marathon in Brazil on July 12, before heading over to Australia in October.
